PHILOSOPHY

Goodwill Industries believes that work plays a critical role in the ability of individuals to achieve desirable life outcomes and that, through work, individuals are enabled to assume, in addition to the role of worker, other roles within the community.

We recognize the complexity of the relationship of work to self-esteem. We seek to serve people in the broadest sense by providing them with opportunities to control their own lives effectively, while becoming positive, functional, interdependent members of our shared community.

Goodwill guarantees that each person served will:

  • Receive services that will enable them to acquire information, make career decisions, and negotiate and balance information, decisions and external factors that have an impact on work;
  • Receive skills training that reflects current labor market demands consistent with the community;
  • Maintain his/her constitutional or civil rights;
  • Expect and receive services without regard to age, sex, race, color, religion, marital status, disability, vocational barrier or national origin;
  • Be treated with dignity and respect, remain free from physical or mental abuse, receive fair wage for all work performed, and
  • Make informed choices.

The ultimate results, therefore, are new abilities gained by the people served to identify needs, decide methods and ways for meeting them, and achieve a satisfying place both in the world of work and the broader community. Another result is a Goodwill organization structured for the purpose of employing people motivated to accomplish that purpose, and prepared to address the needs of the individual through collective activity.
